If you’ve been researching a new build, a remodel, or a high-end repaint, you’ve probably run into the terms “Level 4” and “Level 5” drywall finish. They sound technical, but the concept is simple — and choosing the right one makes a real difference in how your walls look, especially in Florida’s bright, sunlit rooms.
What the finish levels mean
Drywall finishing is graded by levels that describe how much work goes into the surface. For most finished living spaces, the two that matter are Level 4 and Level 5.
- Level 4: joints are taped, fasteners and corner beads are coated, and a finishing coat is applied over the tape. This is the standard for most walls that will get flat paint.
- Level 5: everything in a Level 4, plus a thin skim coat applied over the entire surface. This creates a uniform, glass-smooth wall with no difference in texture between the drywall and the joint compound.
Why a Level 5 finish matters in Florida
Central Florida homes are full of light — big windows, sliding glass doors, and open floor plans. When light travels across a wall at a low angle (what finishers call “critical” or “raking” light), it exposes every imperfection. On a Level 4 wall, you may notice subtle differences where the joint compound and drywall paper absorb paint differently. A Level 5 skim coat eliminates that, so the wall looks perfectly smooth even in harsh light.
The same is true for paint sheen. If you’re using satin, semi-gloss, or a deep, dark color, those finishes reflect light and highlight flaws. A Level 5 surface is the safest foundation for a premium paint job.
So which one do you need?
- Choose Level 4 for most standard walls that will be painted with a flat or matte finish in normal lighting.
- Choose Level 5 for rooms with large windows or dramatic lighting, walls getting gloss or dark paint, accent walls, and high-end homes where a flawless surface is the goal.
